Miasto położone w zachodniej części Anglii, w hrabstwie metropolitalnym Greater Manchester, u podnóża gór Pennińskich. Założone w roku 1086 niedaleko dawnej twierdzy rzymskiej Mamucium (Mancunium). Ważny ośrodek przemysłowy i sportowy kraju. Liczy 503 tys. mieszkańców (2011).
